Clegg touts common sense approach
Republican state Sen. Bob Clegg, who is running for the 2nd Congressional District seat, launched a new radio ad last week.
The 60-second ad started airing Monday, the same day he officially filed for office with the secretary of state. The ad, "A Little Common Sense," discusses the need for a more common sense approach to the needs of working families in America who are looking for relief in these turbulent economic times.
"Washington is full of people with advanced degrees ... so how come they aren't smart enough to balance the federal budget or figure out how to let working families keep more of what they earn?" Clegg asks in the ad.
Clegg is running against Jennifer Horn, Grant Bosse and Jim Steiner in the Republican primary. The winner will face incumbent Democrat Paul Hodes in November.

Clegg: Adam Walsh Bill Gives Sex Offenders "License" to Avoid Arrest
Concord, NH - Debate is raging in the State House over just how closely New Hampshire should track sex offenders. Last week, a Senate committee removed key provisions of the state's proposed "Adam Walsh" law, turning down calls from police and victims' advocates to suspend the driver's licenses of offenders who fail to register. Senator Bob Clegg of Hudson says a suspended license could help law enforcement recognize such offenders during routine traffic stops.

Charlie Arlinghaus: Why is NH taxing us to send millions to Saudi Arabia?
DESPITE A DEFICIT approaching $300 million, New Hampshire uses some taxes on gasoline to send millions of dollars to large multinational oil companies. To make sure more money gets collected from you and sent to Saudi Arabia, Venezuela or Russia, a slim majority of the House passed a $2 million gasoline tax increase last month...Two years ago, state Sen. Robert Clegg summed up the ridiculousness of the program, explaining that we give them 100 percent of the costs of the program "and we give it to them even though they have the assets to do it themselves." I'm glad that the oil tanks are getting cleaned up, but I wonder if perhaps Saudi Arabia has the resources to pay some of the cost without sending me the bill through my taxes.

Weight-loss bill faces uphill battle
CONCORD – Business leaders, insurers, a medical expert and a primary opponent all ganged up on the proposal of Sen. Robert Clegg, R-Hudson, that would require insurers to cover the cost of weight-loss surgery. Clegg retold his personal story of having to pay more than $20,000 out-of-pocket in September for a gastric bypass procedure after a Boston doctor concluded he was a cancer and hypertension risk. "In essence my body was killing itself. I am not unique,'' Clegg told the House Commerce Committee on Tuesday at the final hearing of the bill. Doctors advised Clegg to have the bypass because it also would correct problems with his metabolism.

The Wall Street Journal: Huckabee Launches PAC to Help GOP Candidates
Former Arkansas governor and unsuccessful presidential candidate Mike Huckabee reincarnated his presidential campaign site, www.mikehuckabee.com, Tuesday into the online venue for his newest venture: Huck PAC. “Huck PAC is committed to helping Republicans regain control of the House and Senate, regain a majority of governorships and elect John McCain as the 44th President of the United States,” according to the mission statement. The new site still has some kinks to work out: the hyped noon launch failed to happen on time and some of the links don’t work yet. “This is the 1.0 version of our website,” the site notes. But they are already touting the kind of candidates Huckabee is supporting. The first featured candidate is New Hampshire state Sen. Bob Clegg, who is running for the House seat held by freshman Democratic Rep. Paul Hodes.

NH senator: Pay for weight-loss surgery
CONCORD – State Sen. Bob Clegg is on a personal crusade -- to lose 150 pounds and to make New Hampshire insurers pay for weight-loss surgery for morbidly obese people like him. Clegg, a 53-year-old, 271-pound Republican from Hudson, is on his way on both counts. He has lost 105 pounds since bariatric surgery in September where his stomach was reduced to the size of a cup. He has dropped from a 62 portly suit size to a 50 long. He can walk without hauling hard to draw a breath. Yesterday, the state Senate gave preliminary approval to his bill to require that New Hampshire insurers include bariatric surgery as an option in treating diseases and ailments caused by obesity.

New Hampshire Republicans Eager to Challenge Freshman Dem
Republican candidates are already campaigning on issues such as the economy and local job growth as well as national concerns such as finding a solution to the ongoing war in Iraq, a topic that strongly resonated in the state in 2006. Most candidates in the district, which borders Canada, also have spoken out about a need to rein in illegal immigration. With legislative experience and the network that comes with it on his side, many already regard latecomer Clegg as the Republican primary frontrunner. Dante Scala, University of New Hampshire political scientist and author characterized Clegg as “head and shoulders” above his competitors, owing to his political experience.

Drastic path to slimming down: Insurers would cover weight-loss surgery
After Clegg opted for weight-loss surgery in September, he has lost more than 100 pounds and seen his weight-related health problems recede. A Senate committee that heard testimony from Clegg and his Boston surgeon voted unanimously to endorse the legislation. The full Senate will vote on the measure Thursday.

Statement on the Education Ammendment by Senator Clegg
The proposed constitutional amendment on education funding, CACR 34, states that in fulfillment of the state’s duties (as has been defined by the NH State Supreme Court), the legislature shall have the responsibility and the authority to define what an adequate public education is. The problem with CACR 34 is that it also allows for mandates to be levied down to local school systems. For example, the legislature has determined that full day kindergarten and preschool is essential to an adequate education. My question is: Who will pay for this?

Senate Warmly Receives Amendment
The debate on the Senate floor was oddly subdued. Maybe it’s because there was little doubt the constitutional amendment would pass. Or, sponsor Democrat Joe Foster says, maybe it’s because the 24 senators had a big lunch. 1:23 Chinese food will do that to any group. Foster made his joke, after his amendment had passed in a landslide. But before lawmakers had voted, the Nashua Democrat was all business. He warned his colleagues that the new funding formula that he and others are working on is not going to make many people happy. 1:20 when it’s released, unless we spend millions more than we are spending today, I predict none of us in this body will like the results. The plan that we will put forward will not be as good a plan as we could do. Why? B/c it can’t be.

Movement on I-93 widening project urged
CONCORD – Legislators from towns from Londonderry to Salem along Interstate 93 yesterday urged a quick approach to widening the highway. The 10-year highway plan that Gov. John Lynch has proposed would widen the highway to four lanes each way from the state border in Salem to Exit 3 in Windham and fix the interchange at Exit 5. He wants the Department of Transportation to plan for extending the four lanes to Manchester and to lay groundwork for a new Exit 4A in Derry. Sen. Robert Clegg, R-Hudson, suggested a large bond issue to help speed work and to get ahead of construction inflation. That would also provide an economic boost with new jobs.

NH Senate votes 19-5 to pass constitutional school aid amendment
After years of fighting over a school aid pot that never grows bigger, the state Senate voted Thursday to change the constitution so the neediest towns could be singled out for aid. The 19-5 bipartisan vote ensures a repeat of last year's fight with the House over putting a constitutional amendment on the November ballot. Democratic Gov. John Lynch, Senate Majority Leader Joseph Foster and Senate Republican Leader Ted Gatsas crafted the amendment that they say will allow the state to stop sending a base per pupil amount of aid to every town. They argue wealthier towns don't need the state's help like poor towns do...Sen. Bob Clegg objected the state could use the new power to circumvent an existing constitutional prohibition against the state mandating programs it doesn't fund. For example, lawmakers could decide an adequate education includes preschool programs, then only pay for them in poor towns, he said. "The amendment says the (Legislature) will decide how much money to give you," said Clegg, R-Hudson.
